PMFME Scheme Details
PMFME stands for Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises scheme. It is a comprehensive initiative designed to formalise India’s food processing sector, empowering entrepreneurs in the agri-food industry. Launched by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, this scheme aligns with the government’s ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative.
PMFME Scheme Timeline and Objective
The PMFME scheme was launched in 2020 and will run until 2025, with a goal to enhance the food processing sector in India. The key objective is to formalise micro-enterprises, focusing on Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and producer cooperatives engaged in food processing.
This centrally sponsored scheme has an outlay of Rs. 10,000 crores over 5 years. The funding will be shared between the central and state governments in a 60:40 ratio, with a special provision for North-Eastern and Himalayan states at a 90:10 ratio.
One District One Product (ODOP)
Under the PMFME scheme, the One District One Product (ODOP) approach has been adopted. The idea is to promote locally produced food items that are unique to a particular district. This approach will focus on increasing procurement scale, enhancing services, and building an effective marketing strategy.
Examples of products supported under ODOP include tomatoes, litchi, potatoes, millet-based products, fishery, mangoes, animal feed, poultry, and meat. Traditional Indian products like turmeric, amla, and honey will also be promoted.
